What were you doing one year ago today?
Submitted by CassandraMorgan.
I was in college, making almost straight a's (fucking math, got a D). Sometimes I miss it, and I'm pondering going back after I move, you can take Arabic as your language, and Chinese too! Xao! I wonder what I'll be doing a year from today.
What's one family recipe that you wish you knew how to cook?
My mother's Sicilian Style Pasta, jesus it's great! Maybe I can get it from her before I move... I can dream after all!
What is one of your addictions?
Submitted by Paperheart.
I will list them in level of importance!
But first, let's ask webster.com to define addiction;
addiction; a compulsion or overpowering urge to use a substance, regardless of potential or actual harm.
Would you rather smoke than save a drowning basket of kittens? Would you rather have sex than take out the trash for six weeks?
No, I wouldn't do that.
What I consider to be an addiction are habits thought of by others as harmful. Smoking; yes it's nasty. I love it, leave me the hell alone. Sex, god do I love it. OH NO! Sex outside of marriage with a committed partner! Whatever will I do! Hold on to your britches religious right, if I were to detail the things and my dirty Brian do on a weekly basis, you would have to fall down to the ground and beg god to take away the thoughts of also wanting to do such things.
My true guilty pleasure... It's the L Word. Finally, I've said it. It all started out when my gay sis wanted me to download copies of it for her, because she doesn't have cable. I watched it, was hooked. This wonderful world of art and sex, so seductive. God I wish I could go on a cutting binge spree and have my book published, but alas, I'm not the beautiful psychotic Jenny. I am the cute, pudgy, pale as hell Sara. But one day.......

What's the best way to spend a rainy day?

Sleeping. Just roll up in a comforter, close your eyes, and wake up at night.
What are your weekend plans?
Man, whoever reads this I feel sorry for you. I planned to clean out my diningroom, rearrange the computers, set up the lan and wireless network (which i achieved halfway, dammit), and study for the four tests I have this week. I watched about 17 hours of things I missed during the week, and smoked 3 packs of cigarettes since friday morning. So there you go.
What are 5 things you'd like to accomplish in the next 5 years?
1. I want to finish my degree, whether it kills me or not.
2. I'd like to go to Egypt for a summer and study Arabic, and ride a camel! Camels are so damn cool, they even spit!
3. Lose fear of things that won't happen, but might happen. That fear hinders everyone from doing great things.
4. Quit smoking. My date to quit is after I graduate college, so I may indulge that sinful pleasure until then.
5. Have a kid or adopt one. After I read about that senator who wants to sterilize poor people, I thought about it alot. Without people to follow us, who'll pick up where we left off?
What's the most memorable building you've lived in?
Submitted by Shelly.
When I was eight or nine, I can't really remember which it was now, I lived in some cheap housing near the purple project houses that still lay vacant today. Every day some horrible happening was going on where we lived. I won the spelling bee (almost, I still got a trophy) living in that building. I saw John, my laotian friend's mom throw him into the street from my bedroom window, because she needed the whole house for some johns she was working that day. He ran barefoot to the clearing behind the complex in the snow. You could see the tent he lived in from a stolen tarp and sticks off a tree for three days before sheriff's deputies forced him to return home.
We would gather empty baggies and bullet shells from the corner by our elementary school, bringing these precious artifacts to our teachers and get yelled at. Sometimes we would arrive at school in the morning, with broken windows and spray painted walls, screaming "VXVI" in black and red paint. Vadio Sixteen Locos were all the rage back then.
I remember being forced to go home because I had snorted chalk and tylenol. We ran a fake drug trade in our fourth grade class, a real learning experiance. When the assistant teacher caught on that all the chalk had gone missing, someone snitched on us all. The principal wanted the names of the "dealers" and no one said a thing. That was the day I learned that if you were quiet nothing could be held against you.
I remember the black eye of the manager's wife. She was always being beaten half to death, but always smiling. She would watch me after school sometimes. She showed me how if you took a needle and pulled fluid from an orange, and tried to reinject it, the needle would fly across the room. She taught me that when someone hit me, to stay standing and they would get bored. She taught me dirty words in spanish, and said if anyone ever told on me, to pretend I thought it meant stupid. I was a whetta, a white girl, how could they know what I knew anyway?
That was the house I lived in after we had been homeless for a long time. It was the house where my mom cried at the door of the news that her dad had passed away, right after they had made ammends. I learned about loss there. Mom explained things like autopsies and massive heart failure to me that day.
My sister ran away once while we lived in that house. She said she saw a stranger in that clearing who helped her get home, and a bright light. I don't know if she lied or told the truth.
I was the only white girl in the whole class, but that place was the most accepting I have ever lived. I would go home and sit on people's porches. We would talk and hang out, eat chitlins and strange concoctions of Laotion stew that probably were made of dog. We were all poor, but we were also all free in our own way. I miss those days, I felt safest in a place where I could be shot at any time. Maybe one day I can find that place again.
