How to Make a sweet scarf pillow for under 10$
Ah, yes it's that time of year again. Instead of going out on Black Friday and stabbing someone with an Icecicle Knife for a Wii, this little manic depressive whackjob crafts for her family!
This first how-to is how to make someone a nice little pillow out of a scarf!
You will need an old/new square dollar store pillow. It costs a buck, and sometimes has nice material you can save for scraps! You'll need scissors, you should already have them :)
You will need a sewing kit. You can get a pack of 10 different things of thread and three decent needles for 1.29 at walmart!
You need a scarf. I picked up a nice one that was a decent length (about 60 inches, it needs to wrap around the pillow completely twice!) for 7$. Now this part is SUPER important! Make sure your scarf is elastic, somewhat stretchy! When you sew the front on, it will be more area to cover because the pillow fluff will push more to the front, and you'll need the extra room!
If the images are too small, click on them and they'll blow up to a decent size :)
The old/new pillow is just for batting. Think of it as a skeleton for your pillow! I forgot to take a picture of the pillow before because I was going off half baked, but it turned out pretty :D Cut the fabric from the pillow carefully! If you poke a hole in it, it's alright. But it looks nicer with the original shape without pieces of fluff coming out of it.
You'll want to wrap the scarf around it one time. When the scarf goes around it alright, and you're SURE you have enough to do this twice!!! then cut the scarf in half. Now for some fun. There's something about crafting with fabric you need to learn! There's a business side and the party side of fabric. The party side is the pretty side you want the world to see. We will be placing the party side AGAINST the batting! The business side, the ugly side where you can see appliques and such, will face toward you like so:
You'll want to stitch the scarf to the pillow now! I usually cut the half into another half, then stitch each side to the batting,
and then to each other for further security. This way if the batting falls apart, your pillow won't! A note, the first piece you sew on will normally be the backing. The fluffy part will push up in the front, so your front will be a little harder to sew on, and it will appear a little tighter than the back, but it looks nice anyway!
Now for most pillows, you're done! But if you use a scarf like mine, that is somewhat transparent, it looks a little trashy. You don't want people to see your pillowfluff, it's like giving a naked child back at the end of the day to someone you were babysitting, it just makes people go wtf.
This is where your other half of scarf comes into play! Now you're going to make a pillow sham to cover the pillow, a sham of sorts anyway ;) You'll take the fabric, turn it business side out (ugly side out) and line up the edges. You're going to sew the edges of it so you can slip it on. BUT! If you have some pretty thread, you can skip this part, and sew it party side out.
Now, take a break. Your fingers have probably been poked half to death and you're probably a little thirsty and wanting a smoke after the three hours of work you did.
Now place the completed sham on top of the pillow. You can sew the bottom edge on if you'd like, but I usually don't. It looks nicer like a layered skirt, and my cats tend to mess up the outside so I can wash it alot.
Now you have a nice square pillow to gift to a friend. My mom loved hers and slept with it as soon as she got it. Happy Holidays and such!
